COLDWATER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver was arrested after troopers discovered over 2,000 grams of heroin and fentanyl in her vehicle during a traffic stop, according to Michigan State Police.
On Saturday, troopers pulled a vehicle over on I-69 near State Road in Coldwater Township because it was going 97 mph in a 70 mph zone, MSP said. The driver did not have a valid driver’s license, so troopers asked her to step out of the car while they searched the vehicle.
During the search, troopers found over 2,090 grams of heroin/fentanyl, which was estimated to be valued between $250,000 and $300,000, according to statistics from the Michigan High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Since as little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal, police estimated the amount of heroin/fentanyl seized could have killed about a million people.
The driver was booked into the Branch County Jail without bond, MSP said.
For this quantity of Heroin and Fentanyl to come through Branch County, it implies how many more are bringing this amount of drugs through? Until laws are changed, and classification of Fentanyl as a weapon of Mass Destruction is issued, drug dealers will risk their lives and the lives of others taking their chances bringing the weapon into our towns and cities. Coldwater has a drug problem, and it’s no secret. With mental illness, homelessness, and drug abuse, our community faces a real challenge in reducing this type of behavior.
