KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Erectile dysfunction, depression, irritability: Those are just some of the documented, negative effects that long-term exposure to pornography can produce.
“I don’t think really any use of pornography is healthy,” Kalamazoo-based professional counselor Ray Brandon said. “I think it needs to be zero.”
Brandon, who runs group clinics for men trying to eliminate pornography from their lives, told News Channel 3 porn addiction is a growing problem in Southwest Michigan and nationwide.
According to Brandon, pornography depletes dopamine levels in the brain, and that even infrequent pornography use can lead to feels of social isolation.
“Shame flourishes in the dark. It flourishes in isolation. And that’s what this kind of addiction does. It isolates individuals,” Brandon said.
And there are more and more Americans falling into the trap.
New studies reveal that pornhub.com is the fourth most visited website in the United States, behind only Facebook, Google, and YouTube, with in excess of 100 million visitors per day.
“Go on the internet today. It’s like pornography is getting shoved down your throat,” says recovering pornography addict Andy Pace.
Pace, who is now missionary in Peru, tells News Channel 3 he struggled with pornography addiction for four decades.
As a result, Pace said pornography viewing took over his life causing his relationships with his wife, his children and friends to suffer.
“That’s where the damage comes,” Pace said. “Because you can never get quite enough.”
“I was alone with pornography and then feeling so ashamed about myself,” said Nate O’Neill.
O’Neill, like Pace, became addicted to pornography at a young age and tried everything to quit. “One of the default states of a porn addict would be that they feel this kind of background refrigerator hum of discontent,” O’Neill said. “Like, everywhere I go, something’s wrong!”
For both men – group therapy did the trick. Now, they counsel others on breaking the cycle of porn.
“It just helps you sit down with other people, tell your story, come clean, and then start working through it,” O’Neill said. “I have never met a single addict who was able to recover in isolation.”
Counselor Ray Brandon agrees.
According to Brandon, group counseling sessions can assure someone trying to free themselves from porn that they’re not alone.
“They’re using up a certain part of that dopamine which gives the sense of connection,” Brandon said. “But then they don’t have enough energy to actually connect. And so they go deeper into loneliness. That’s where it becomes an addiction.”
